May 12 - 3-Man Shamble

Finally a nice day!  And thankfully the format contributed to decent pace of play.  If you liked the format, I will take the credit.  If you didn't, you need to know it had Rich Elliott's fingerprints all over it.

As a recap, I took the two best scores on each hole to determine the gross winner.  The Net winner was based on 80% of handicap.  For what it is worth, the low gross score was recorded by Kyle Masterson with a 71.  No doubt in large part due to his teammates.

April 28 - Enough is Enough with the Weather!

Little did Dennis White know that his disappointing 86 was going to be in the money.  That is how awful the weather was.  And yet, 29 of you brave souls shivered your way through 18 holes on Saturday.  Here is another good example - except for Eddie Sans remarkable birdie on 9 (I would like to hear this story), there were no pars on the ninth hole.  I could use other examples of how brutal playing into the wind and rain was, but if you were there, it's redundant.  Let's just hope we are done with the crappy weather so we can play some real golf.

Year Starts with a Whimper

A nine-hole event was not what we had in mind, but it's better than nothing.  I would again like to say welcome to all the "new guys" this year who have made this the largest Men's Club at The Fort since the golf course relinquished control to the players.

Needless to say, making it a nine-hole event made for interesting results.  Will Haskett left no doubt on the gross side with an amazing 34.  Mid-season form!  We then had six 39's vying for 5 slots.  Because it advantageous for Andy to slide over to the net side, anyone shooting a 39 was in the money.  With the backup from #9 in effect, Rich Elliott was second on the strength of a birdie on #9 and Mark Studley birdied #8 to take third.  Bill Pattison was 4th, Dennis White 5th and Jeff Bertrand 6th.  If you didn’t read the flyer being handed out, you wouldn’t know that we upped the purse by $100 for this event (and hopefully future events).

We had two sandba ... excuse me, newcomers take the two top spots on the net side. Tim Downs fired an awesome net 30.5 while David Giffel took second on the backup with a 34.5.  In fairness to Mr. Downs, we have played a lot together over the years, and I didn't know he had it in him.  Tim also took the only closest to the pin on #5.  Nice job Tim! Also with 34.5’s were Andy Wilmes and John Hickey.  Closing out the money were Terry Long with a net 35 and another newcomer Mike Scaringe with a net 35.5.

3 Man Shamble - Season End

First, let me say that it was a heck of a year for the Men's Club. I will be sending a PowerPoint presentation with all the stats, so please make sure to view it.  I want to thank the board for all of their support, participation and guidance this past year.  Thanks Bill, Rich, Dave, Nate, Eric and Bryan!

Now on to the last event.  There is so much to write about that I'm sure I will miss something.  With the help of the Pro Shop, I came up with the brilliant idea to start in the afternoon to avoid the frigid temps and the Marathon.  So far so good.  Little did I know they had an outing in front of us.  And I thought we were slow!  So when Ed Ferguson e-mailed me on Friday asking if we are going to be able to finish, I thought what a silly question, of course we are.  By the absolute grace of God the last two groups somehow managed to finish in the dark.  How dark was it?  We couldn't make out the carts in the 18th fairway and had to listen for balls to drop.

It proved to be a very tight contest with only ten points separating first from last.  I only say that so my last place team doesn't feel so bad.  On the strength of John Maloney's HOLE-IN-ONE on 14, which in Shamble terms gave them a 2, the team of Bertrand, Kleber and Maloney scored a 134 to beat the team of Catton, Haynes and Ferguson by 1.  This is unfairly Maloney's third ace of his career.  Up to this point this year he hadn't won spit, so apparently he was due.  For those of you in attendance (you could have been anywhere on the course) there was a great deal of confusion over who dropped the historic shot especially with a screaming (like a little girl) Jeff Bertrand sprinted (as best he could) to the hole to attest.

The other big story of the evening was the crowning of a new POINTS WINNER - Andy Wilmes.  Andy ends the year with 250 points and the trophy.  (See Slide Show).  Andy narrowly beat out a dejected Jeff Bertrand by 2.5 points when all was said and done.  Afterwards, Andy was quoted as saying to Jeff, "You should have shown up for the 2-Club Challenge"  where he earned 5 points for playing.  Congratulations Andy!

See all of you next year!!

Vegas Scoring - October 1

Obviously upset about not being in the Points Leader hunt this year, Will Haskett has come back with a vengeance.  Actually, it was some great ham and eggin' with Partner Eddie Sans that gave them an 11 point victory over the team of Tirmenstein and Catton.  Rounding out the winners were Wilmes and Town, Studley and Kotzan and Kleber and Esselman who were edged out by one.  This was most likely due to the score of 16 on the par 3 5th.  Mark Studley birdied for a net 1 and also took the closest to the pin.

FINAL EVENT - OCTOBER 15  - SHAMBLE FORMAT

The Points Leader race is coming to a close.  With a third place finish in the Vegas Scoring, Andy Wilmes has widened his lead.  Here's how it now stands:

Masterson Wins 2011 Match Play Tournament

Kyle Masterson overcame a 17 stroke differential to win the 2011 Match Play Tournament on Tuesday evening over Jordan Billingsley.  After going down 2 on the front, Masterson reeled off eight consecutive pars to apply the pressure on young Billingsley.  The match was finally decided on 18 with a halve.

Kyle took home a cool $500 for his victory.  Jordan collected $300.  Congratulations to both competitors!

Points for Match Play will be awarded accordingly:

Round 1 - 10 points

Killer B's Triumph in Ryder Mug

Despite some questionable sportsmanship at the end (I was grinding so hard I thought they were going to have to put the paddles on me), it proved to be an awesome day of golf with the Killer B's breaking their losing streak against the Jayhawks.  A spotless day by Andy Wilmes (2 Points) could not pull the Jayhawks out of an afternoon funk.  Led by 1.75 Points for Bertrand, Haynes, Robinson and J. Billingsley, the Killer B's broke the morning tie after Alternating Shot and Best Ball to post an impressive 7 to 5 win in the afternoon.  The final score was 13 to 11.

Congratulations to Team Captain Dave Robinson on the win and to Dave and Rich Elliott for putting on a great event!

September 3 - Low Grow/Low Net
In the words of Points Leader Nathan Warfel, "I'm playing great!" as was witnessed by his one eagle, four birdie round of 71.  Equally as impressive was the net 63 carded by his playing partner Jeff Kleber.  Despite the small field of 24 players, there were seven rounds in the 70's.  Bryan "Comeback Player of the Decade" Sheedy continued his sterling play with a 76 and Rich Elliott followed last week's 77 with yet another one.

August 27 - Low Gross/Low Net

It was a gorgeous morning and what better place to be than on the golf course.  I didn't go back to actually study this, but there seemed to be a awful lot of birdies.  I believe I counted 24 for only 26 golfers.  Bryan Sheedy had 4 alone on his way to a 78.  But the shot of the day came from Kyle Masterson.  His eagle on number 13 was a beautifully arching shot that went straight in.  No not really!  It was kind of a screaming, perhaps even bladed, hook that caught the ridge on the right and turned left and slammed into the pin.  I would call it luck if Kyle hadn't also routinely birdied two holes and shot a 77.  Congrats, Kyle!  Also congrats to Rich Elliott whose 77 gave him the Gross and the Net crown (66) for the event (he won the backup on #18).  Lastly, kudos to Tom Campbell for bringing in the most cash for the event with $99 scoring with a 78, closest to the pin, andthree  skins.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I was so excited about Tom Campbel winning all that money that I failed to realize that Jeff Bertrand won $110 in total.  How boring.

DOUBLE EDITOR'S NOTE: I guess I should have written the narrative after writing the checks.  Tom Campbell actually won $124.

July 30 - Low Gross/Low Net

I think this event snuck up on some people so soon after the Club Championship.  Only 21 golfers were "skins" eligible.  Despite the heat wave, the course was pretty soft from an overnight rain.  Jeff Bertrand lit up the front nine with a 34 on his way to a low gross win.  Will Haskett returned from his illness to shoot a 74 for second place.

On the net side, John Hickey shot a 68 on Friday with three birdies.  Jeff Kleber inched out Ed Karrmann on the backup to place second with a 69.  Mark Studley had one of those days I envy, winning $92 on two skins and two closest to the holes.  Nice job Mark!

Warfel Wins the 2011 Club Championship

It was nearly dark when the final five-some in the Championship Flight reached the 18th green.  Nathan Warfel emerged from the dusk victorious with a final round 73 (150 total) besting Jeff Bertrand by three shots.  Jeff fired a last round 75, but it wasn't quite enough for the fourth time in his illustrious Men's Club career.  Nathan carded seven birdes over the course of the 36 hole tournament.  Brian Lane, who was tied for the lead with a 77 after 18 holes, had 5 birdies and also won two proximities on Saturday.

The round of the weekend belongs to Bryan Sheedy who fired a 73 (154 total) on Saturday.  He held on to win the 1st Flight by four shots over Dennis White who made a charge on the back nine Sunday to take second place with a 158.  Bryan had a total of six birdies over the weekened.

The 2nd Flight was close all weekend with Rick Hughes (83-80) finally taking the lead late over Andy Wilmes (82-84) the first round leader.

The 'White' Flight was also a tight battle with Rob Town shooting an impressive 81 (164 total) on the last round to squeeze by first round leader Jeff Kleber (165) for a one shot win.  Rob is also the winner of the Colts tickets generously offered up by Ian Schmoll.  Rob had a net total of 130 for the weekend.  Congrats.

Thanks to everyone for their patience during the 2 1/2 hour rain delay.  Thanks also to The Fort for their cooperation in making this a successful tournament.

Congratulations to all the winners!

Not to take anything away from Nathan's 75, the 77's by Brian Lane and Dennis White, or the resurrected Ed Karrmann and his net 68, but it is hard to ignore what Jeff Bertrand accomplished on Saturday.  If you're not a regular skins contributor you might want to be after hearing this.  Basically two well-placed shots brought in a tiddy $150.  Jeff birdied #3 and #5 for both net and gross skins and a closest to the pin.  So when you add in the $20 for a 78, he took in $170!  You're my hero!!

We also had two eagles recorded this event.  On Friday  Andy Wilmes carded a 3 on #7 and on Saturday Ian Schmoll scorched #6 with a 3.  Congratulations guys!

Modified Stableford - 5-28

This morning I was reminded of why I dislike the Stabelford format so much (other than the score I posted!).  It took me forever to calculate the scores, and so I am prefacing this post with a disclaimer - if you think I might have somehow gotten your score wrong, just write me and I'll send you the spreadsheet.  The same goes for any time you question a score.

Now to the winners.  Tom Campbell cleaned up with 24 points on the strength of a 77.  Matt Dumas was also in the 20's with 21 points.  Jeff Bertrand was low gross for the weekend with an impressive 76.  Ross Haynes had the proverbial one-shot pay day with a kick in birdie on 14.  He collected $56 on that one swing.  It pays to get in both pots.

Don't forget to put the Club Championship down on your calendar.  This two-day, flighted event will be July 23 & 24.

2 Club Challenge Results - 6/16

Thanks to Joe Fox for the following narrative:

A broken sky and a freshening zephyr greeted seven intrepid golfers for the two-club challenge. The group hit the white tees as a “seven-some” (both to speed up play and add to the pressure of playing in the final group) and great fun and camaraderie was had by all.

There was an interesting mix of clubs chosen, with the mid iron (hybrid) – wedge combo generally prevailing. A few opted for 3 wood -  short iron (your winner), but no putters were chosen (except for the ever eccentric Mr. Warfel, who opted for two putters;  a calamity Jane original and rusty Scotty Cameron. Although eyebrows were raised, his sub-40 round squelched any doubt in his selection). Many great shots were made, with all players gaining the appreciation for “feel”, and questioning the value of the other 12 clubs typically carried.

Congratulations to Mr. Sheedy for his masterful round of 38!!

June 11 - Low Gross/Low Net Results

Just when I thought it wasn't possible to beat Doug Tirmenstein's net 65, I find out Mark Studley fired a net 64 on Friday.  Back to the Blue Tees buddy!!

It is obvious many of you guys have shaken your spring blues and are starting to go low. Case in point, Kyle Masterson's impressive 74.  In all, there were seven rounds in the 70's. In addition to the aforementioned gentlemen, Pattison, Bertand, Elliott and Warfel were also in the 70's.

Don't know if you noticed, but Dave Shonkwiler is considering quitting his day job and is now focusing on winning skins!

May 28 - Low Gross Low Net Results

First of all, I didn't know about starting on the back - at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.  It messed with my intense visualization exercises!  It turned out to be a decent turnout considering the holiday weekend.  Congrats to Will Haskett for winning low gross honors with a 76 and Ross Haynes whose net 69 took Low Net.

Our points leader is currently Andy Wilmes with 70.

FYI - I always start the backup on #18 to break ties.

Member/Guest a Success

Blessed with great and unexpected weather, and a golf course that was in fantastic shape, 20 teams took part in the second Men's Club sponsored Member/Guest.  You may recall that the first was rained out last year.  Tom Campbell and his guest Don Hand stunned the field by shooting a 62 and taking home the first prize of $200.  Stunned because no one knew Tom was a member having rejoined the Men's Club a week before after several years away from the fold.

The remaining three spots - all 64's - were decided on the backup system.  The team of Blake Marti and Doug Evernham fared the best and split $160, followed by the team of Rich Elliott and Mark Humphrey ($120) and Brian and Steve Huffine ($100).

Thanks to everyone who participated this year.  Here's hoping this event grows and we get to share this course with more friends.

Two Man Best Ball Results - April 29, 30 & 31

On the strength of Blake Marti's net 71, the team of Marti and newcomer Ian Schmoll carded a 66 to take top honors for the second event of the year.  Scores overall were still inflated due to fairly tough conditions.  But hey, it beats yard work!

Making his first appearance of the year was 2010 Points Winner Will (the thrill) Haskett who shot a low gross 77.  Rumor has it he hit his drive over the green on #10, but that was probably just put out by his PR people.

Don’t forget to line up your guest for the Member/Guest on May 14.  Details to come.

First One Now Under Our Belts

April 16, 2011 - Low Gross/Low Net

Whew!  That was brutal weather for golf.  God bless you guys for hanging in there.  It was an impressive turnout considering the cold weather, wet conditions and lack of swings this early in the year.  But given all that, we still had winners.  Nathan took advantage of the flex schedule to shoot an 81 in the wind on Sunday.  He won the backup from Joe Fox and newcomer Brian Lane who also shot 81's.  Bill Pattison and a rejuvenated John Kearney rounded out the gross money winners.

On the net side, Andy Wilmes used a couple of early birdies to lay claim to the net top prize with a 71 and two skins.  Victor Bond had a nice payday with a net 72 and a skin.  Other net winners were Terry Long, Mark (say goodbye to the blue tees) Studley and Jim Maggard.

Elliott Wins 2010 Match Play Crown

It is fitting that this is the last official report for 2010.  Armed with 10 strokes, Rich Elliott proved that a mid-level handicapper can win the big prize.

Braving the evening chill, Rich and Greg McCall did battle on October 1 to a gathering crowd of one.  Mr. McCall led the entire front nine only to have his putter go south. His lip outs on 10, 11, 12 & 13 brought the match to even. However, the specter of Mr. Elliott getting strokes on 3 of the last 4 holes proved to be too much and he won the match 2 & 1 to garner the $500 First Place check.  Greg McCall took home the tidy sum of $200 for his efforts.  Congratulations to both of these men for fighting there way through the brackets and thanks to all who participated in the 2010 Match Play event.

See you next year!!

Year Ends in Dramatic Fashion

You know how after a round you do the "woulda, shoulda, coulda," well, the end of the season and the Race for the Jug literally came down to just one shot.  Several people had a hand in the outcome. For instance, if Will Haskett shoots a 76 instead of a 75, Nathan takes top honors for the event and 30 points on the backup.  Even my ill-timed bogey on 18 had a bearing on the outcome.  If I shoot a 75, I really mess things up. But as my wife so accurately pointed out, "You were playing with real good golfers and under no pressure."  Thanks, hon.  If Eric Klein shoots an 80 instead of 81 he beats Jeff Bertrand and Brandon Ashburn on the backup and moves into 4th on the gross side behind Chris Welsh's 79.  That would have given him the points he needed to tie for the lead.  That would have caused a spontaneous decision on a tie-breaker - cut the cup in half, odd/even month possession, or 18 hole playoff!

As it turns out, and despite a double bogey on 18, Will Haskett is your 2010 Points Winner.  His total of 235 bested Eric by just 10 points and Nathan by 15.  But lest you feel sorry for Mr. Klein, The Club Champion, you should be aware that he far outdistanced the field with $405 in prize money.  Mark Studley had a great year coming in second with $375.

Thanks to everyone for a great year. The board will be convening soon to take a look back and then a look ahead to next year.  Your feedback - except for Rob’s - would be much appreciated. We look forward to seeing you again in 2011!

Congratulations to the Event 16 Winners!

Match Play Update

As the year winds down so is the match play tournament.  This is the event with the biggest individual purse and the two competitors left standing are Greg McCall and Rich Elliott. Greg and Rich will meet in the finals to determine who takes home the $500 first place prize and the "nothing to sneeze at" $200 second place prize.  There is an interesting subplot to this match as earlier this year Greg was seen giving some tips to Rich on the driving range.  Could come back to haunt Greg as he will also be giving Rich a few strokes in this match-up.  Good luck guys.

The winner of the $100 third place prize will be either Bryan Courtney or Nathan Warfel as they will meet in the consolation match.  Stay tuned over the next few weeks to see how the match play wraps-up.

If you have any feedback about the match play tournament please share that with Eric Klein (ericklein995@comcast.net) so he can take that into consideration for next years tournament.

Member-Guest Washed Out

Thanks to everyone who ventured out on Saturday.  I especially feel bad for those of you who were somehow managing to put together a decent round.  Next year we will try to make this event bigger, better and earlier!

Everyone who showed will get 5 participation points.  That will not, however, change the Race for the Jug.  For those of you who were not there, on Saturday I showcased the Claret Jug the winner will receive for most points.  On the 16th it will be Eric Klein, Will Haskett and Nathan Warfel vying for the honor.

FINAL EVENT: OCTOBER 16 - LOW GROSS/LOW NET

LowGross/Low Net - September 18

I have to admit, I would have been all puffed up after finally playing a decent round if it weren't for the fact that I was witnessing John Maloney's net 63.  His front nine 36 was a thing of beauty.  He also managed to bag his first birdie of the year. Speaking of birdies, 17 of the 25 participants carded at least one. Will Haskett led the pack with 5 birdies on his way to the other 75.

The year is winding down with just two more events.  Points leader Eric Klein is being seriously pushed by Will Haskett.  The lead is now just 15.

Match Play Tournament Update

The 2010 Match Play championship is down to the final four.  One bracket will pit Greg McCall against Bryan Courtney while the other bracket will have Nathal Warfel facing off again Rich Elliott.  The winners of these matches will then face one another to determine first and second place while the losers will play in the consolation match to determine 3rd place. Best of luck to Rich, Nathan, Greg, and Bryan!

Two Man Best Ball - September 4

If you haven't noticed yet, the backup is based on performance on 18.  Thus the birdie on 18 allowed the team of Elliott and Klein to take the top spot.  But hats off to Haskett and Sans for a smokin' 28 on the front side and for Will shooting a 74. Chris Barnes comes out of self-imposed exile to help his team post a 65.

Ryder Mug - Jayhawks Squeak One Out

I won't spend any time flaunting the fact that the Jayhawks once again dominated the Ryder Mug; rather, I want to thank the 24 of you for your participation on this incredible day.  Even though there is much glory in being a Club Champion, the Ryder Mug is fast becoming the cornerstone of the Men's Club.  To me and many others I talked to, it is as much fun as one can have golfing.  There is nothing like alternating shots to get your blood pumping or a significant putt on 9 with a small gallery of teammates watching!  Thanks again to Dave Robinson for his leadership in making this a success.

If you go to RESULTS, you will see how I allocated points for the Ryder Mug.  Basically, participants got 5 points for every .25 points they earned.  As a result, the players having the most productive day were John Hickey and Brian Huffine for the Jayhawks and John Maloney for the Killer B's with 1 3/4 points.

Eric Klein still sits atop the Points Race with 180, followed by Nathan Warfel with 165.

NEXT EVENT: Saturday, September 4

The MEMBER/GUEST for October 2 is on, so please contact a friend and have them join us for some Men's Club hospitality.

Event #9 Low Gross/Low Net

No offense to anyone, but because of the small number of players, we were paying out for scores that usually don't make the grade.  Having not seen the scores for Braz and Warfel on Friday, I reluctantly provide the results I have now.

As I was kicking back on the upper deck of the Chippewa Hotel overlooking the Straits of Mackinac sipping on an exotic beer, I hear you had rain on Friday.  So imagine my surprise when I heard there were two 73's fired on a soggy course.  Eric (Club Champ) Klein and Bill (I told you I would be ready when I got back from Germany) Pattison both achieved that feat.  Nice shooting - almost Warfelesque. Eric has now expanded his points lead to 15 over Ed Karrmann.

Also shooting round in the 70's were Rich (Moses) Elliott with a 79 and Will (someone else needs to add my scorecard) Haskett with a 76. Nice job.

2010 Club Championship Results

27 strong-willed competitors teed it up last weekend for this 36-hole slugfest.  It just goes to show how two days of intense golf can separate the real men from the boys and uncover every conceivable weakness in your game.

Congratulations to the winners below.  Eric Klein was the big winner who gets his name on the plaque in the Pro Shop for all future generations to admire or until the State sells the golf course.

This event has caused a big shake up in the Run for the Cup Points Challenge.  Ed (White Tee) Karrmann has taken the top spot with 130 points, closely followed by Mark (I feel 35) Studley with 125.

Special thanks to Bryan Sheedy for his leadership on this event and to Jon Chapple and staff for their help and generous support of the Club Championship.

NEXT EVENT:  August 14

Just to show how frustrating keeping it together can be, catch this clip of poor Ross Haynes.  The camera man writes, "Second round, fourth hole, Ross Haynes (the underwear mogul) hits his “T” shot left into standing water/creek. This video taken as a hushed crowd watched a bibbed Dr. Haynes blast his ball out of the water, barely missing the camera man and landing in a similar location farther from the hole. This resulted in a 10 on the hole. When asked how he got a 10, the answer given was “missed the putt for a 9”.  I particularly like the camera man's giggle and the wiping of the face after the shot.  Sorry Ross, I just had to share.

Event #8 - Low Gross/Low Net

On the one hand, I am disappointed that more guys aren't playing, but then I think, it just makes it easier for guys to win who might not otherwise.  Since I did not participate (I needed the stinkin' 5 points!) I don't have any first hand knowledge. (I did sweat my nards off Saturday playing a great course north of Rome GA called The General at Barnsley Gardens Resort.  If you're ever in that area, check it out.)

Nathan Warfel not only won the low gross with a 79, but he caught Will Haskett for Points Leader. They are currently tied at 110.  Will did manage to take second with an 80, with Bill Pattison (back fresh from a move from Germany) and Chuck Sukurs with 81 and Jeff (I never thought I would win a nickel with an 82) Bertrand coming in 5th.

On the net side, Kevin Braz fired an awesome net 68 to take honors.  Dave (I am peeking for the Club Championship) Robinson took second with a 69.  Other net winners were John (wrong side) Maloney, Mark Studley and One Eye Guy.

One of the keys to doing well with Vegas scoring are the flip holes.  The winning team of Dave Higgins and Dave Robinson had little trouble with these four holes as they played a remarkably consistent round with a combined score of 704.  In fact, these two gentlemen had the two lowest net scores with 66 and 68, respectively. Second and third places were decided by one stroke with the team of Bond & Kleber inching out Hughes & Maloney.

Low gross for the event was Greg McCall with 77.  Branden Ashburn and Nathan Warfel also broke 80 with rounds of 79.  Will Haskett recorded the second eagle of the year with a 3 on #7.  Will is still the points leader with 85.

Match Play Update

Most of the first round matches in this year match play tournament have been completed and here is an updated bracket.  Looks like most of the matches were quite competitive. For those of you who have not yet completed the your first round matches please do so as soon as possible.  Just a reminder, for those going on to the second round don't forget to look up the handicap for your opponent prior to you match as we are using the current handicap for each player at the time of the match.  Good luck!

Event #6 - Low Gross/Low Net

What must a 67/net 62 feel like?  Nathan Warfel was unconscious on Saturday firing a 32 on the front with 5 consecutive birdies from holes 2 to 6.  He followed that up with three more birdies on the back - 10, 15 & 18.  Oh sure, pick all the easy holes! According to my calculations, Nate won a total of $167 including what has to be a record 10 skins!!  Jeff Bertrand and Will Haskett fired 78s to finish a distant second and third respectively.

On the net side, Rich Elliott posted a very impressive net 67/gross 78.  He was followed by Dennis White, Dave Robinson, Ed Ferguson and Ed Karrmann - all with net 70s.

The new RUN FOR THE CUP (I just made that up) points leader is Will Haskett with 80 followed by Elliott and Warfel at 75.  (See Standings for all results to date.)

Be sure to tell your significant other that you will be busy on July 31 and August 1 vying for the coveted CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP.   More to come soon.

Next Event is July 10.

Event #5 Cancelled

We originally had 33 golfers commit to playing Event #5.  Because Saturday's rounds were washed out, we did not have the required 50% participation.  Therefore, the event is cancelled and the prize money will move to a future event.

Those of you who got your round in on Friday or Sunday, please accept my apologies especially if you shot a career round 69.

NEXT EVENT: Saturday, June 26.  Format will be Low Gross/Low Net.

Event #4 - 2-Man Best Ball (Blind Draw)

It was Bryan Courtney Day for the 4th Event.  Bryan and his lofty 19 handicap not only carried Nathan Warfel to victory with a net 65, but he won a total of 5 skins. Know wonder he's so anxious for Match Play.  Speaking of Match Play, the field is set for the June 4 bracket announcement.  If you didn't get in, but want to be put on the waiting list, just let me know.

Back to Best Ball.  If your partner made you a winner when you didn't think you were in the running, track them down and thank them.  In fact, it occurs to me that you may not even know your partner, so take the time to get to know them and maybe even request to play with them.

Other noteworthy performances - Chris Welsh posted an impressive 76 on Saturday and Matt Dumas eagled #7.  This is the second eagle in this young Men's Club season.  Dave Shonkwiler is currently on a roll and has taken sole possession of both points and earning.

See you in a couple weeks.  Have a safe and happy holiday!

Event #3 - Stableford Scoring

On the strength of a net 66 and 3 net eagles, Dave Shonkwiler had a $100 day and blew the competition away with a whopping +20 points.  Only 15 golfers ended up in the plus points column.

After three events, Will Haskett and Ed Karrmann are the points leaders with Will maintaining a slight lead in prize money ($80).  Remember, there will be a trophy for the points leader at the end of the year.

As of this writing, there are only 5 slots left for the Match Play Tournament that starts June 5.  The drawing for pairings will be June 4.  Look for the bracket on the website to see who you need to waffle stomp.

Some Reminders

This is mostly for the new guys and I apologize for not communicating this more clearly in the past:

  • The goal of the Men's Club is for members to share experiences with other golfers they may not know.  We will accept special requests, as long as the goal is not abused.  Fridays and Sundays are reserved for special circumstances, which is why we do not have skins or proximities on those days.  The Men's Club is still a Saturday morning event.
  • Prize money will always be available in The Fort Pro Shop by the Wednesday after an event.  There is a box with envelopes placed alphabetically.  Amounts over $20 will be in check form.
  • If you do not designate that you want to play early or late on Saturday, I will throw your name in the hat.  However, I will look to see if you have played with the same people recently and then move people around.
  • You are on your own for tee time reservations on Friday and Sunday.
  • The Match Play sign-up is coming soon.  It will be limited to the first 32 golfers.  More information to come.

Event # 2 - Low Gross/Low Net

We had a surprisingly good field for the second event considering the threatening weather.  Thanks for hanging in there and accepting a late change to the format.  The fact is, there are always going to be no-shows when the weather looks bad.  Needless to say, a 2-Man Best Ball format (especially when you are trying to put teammates together) won't work if your partner doesn't show.

There was a great opportunity to win some coin with a number of the big guns staying home in bed (you know who you are!).  Will Haskett and Eric Klein shot 79's to take low gross honors and newcomer Kevin Braz took low net with a 69 on Sunday.

Now John Hickey understands how this works - with one swing he won one skin and a proximity for a total of $40.  Apparently the other 17 don't matter!

We're Off - Event #1

Thank you to everyone for choosing to play in The Fort Men's Club this year.  If you have any questions or concerns, please know you can contact me - especially if you think we got a score wrong.

I want to take a moment to recognize the 16 new members of the Men's Club:

Greg McCall, Bill Pattison, Bryan Courtney, Branden Ashburn, Matt Dumas, Michael Cook, Steve Coyner, Kevin Braz, Brian Askins, David Higgins (returning), Jordan Billingsley, Andy Wilmes (returning), Brien Richmond, Collin Mitchell, Eddie Sans and jeff Kleber (returning).

I want to make you aware of a couple of changes this year.  Hopefully by now you have visited indianagolf.org where your BlueGolf handicap resides.  Make sure to post all your non-Men's Club scores there.  Thanks again to Nathan for posting our scores.

The other change is that the Men's Club board (Warfel, Robinson, Sheedy, Elliott & Klein) has given me permission to raise the cash prizes by $720 this year.  It's not a huge deal, but it allows 10 players to win each event versus 8.  Now we are paying $60-40-30-20-10.

As for the round itself, a shout out goes to Todd Nierste for his eagle on 10.  And, because I witnessed it myself, snaps to Bryan Courtney for his 97 foot birdie putt on 17.

THANKS FOR A GREAT YEAR!!

28 brave souls teed it up in chilly temps for the year-ending Ryder Mug event.  The Jayhawks lead by Captain Rich Elliott with a supporting cast consisting of Rick Hughes, were successful in holding down the determined and well-informed Killer B's of Dave Robinson - 18 1/2 to 9 1/2.  The winning team split the $1,200 pot.  Congrats.

Thanks to all those who participated in this year's events.  On behalf of the board, we wish you a great off-season and look forward to seeing you again in the spring.

Kevin

October 3 - Low Gross/Low Net

Well, that's it.  Another regular season in the bag.  21 golfers braved the blustery conditions over the weekend with a record 8 players going out on Friday.  Despite the wind and slick greens, Chris Welsh managed a great round of 76.  The other round in the 70's was Nathan Warfel's 79.  The net winner was Victor Bond with a 72 while Ed Karrmann came in second on the tie-breaker.

September 19 - Modified Stableford

I apologize for not posting this sooner, but I wanted to give Kevin Bower his due for winning the Match Play Tournament.

Only 16 golfers teed it up for the Modified Stableford event.  And while the odds of winning some coin were increased, this scoring system that I borrowed from the PGA (Double or Worse -3, Bogey -1, Par 0, Birdie +2, Eagle +5, Double Eagle +8) did not bode well for most.  In fact, only three golfers were in the plus column - Karrmann, Bond & Billingsley.

Congratulations to John Kearney for a natural eagle on 8.  I want to hear that story!

NEXT EVENT- OCTOBER 3, LOW GROSS/LOW NET

This is the last regularly scheduled event.  Please remember to sign up for the RYDER MUG EVENT on October 17.  We would like to see everyone particpate in this final competition and dinner.  Deadline is October 6 and the total cost is $85.  Make checks out to The Fort Men's Club.  The winning team splits $1,000.

BOWER WINS MATCH PLAY!

Kevin Bower fought less than desireable weather conditions on Sunday, September 20 to beat Ross Haynes 4 & 3 in the first ever Men's Club Match Play Tournament.  Kevin took home $400 for his efforts and Ross $200.  The Consolation Match to determine Third Place between Chris Gauss and Mark Studley has not been scheduled yet.

Thanks again to Eric Klein for his work in putting this tournament together.  Thanks also to all of you who participated and kept the event moving along.  I hope you enjoyed the competition.

Finish the Season with a Bang!

The Ryder “Mug” Season Finale

October 17

You’ve got to play in this one!!

For whatever reason, the Men’s Club season has historically fizzled to a close.  The yearend Ryder Cup event was supposed to be the carrot at the end for those who scored points by hanging in there all year and playing reasonably well.  Because we want one last chance to bring you all together, we are opening up this 27-hole competition and dinner to everyone.

Here’s what’s happening:

27-Hole Ryder “Mug” COMPETITION (Because We're too cheap for a “Cup”)

·         Low Ball (“Net” Score) – Two-man 9-Hole Match Play

·         Alternating Shot (“Net” Score) – Two-man 9-Hole Match Play

·         Individual (“Net” Score) – 9-Hole Match Play

·         1 Point for Winning Team – ½ Point for Halved Match

Schedule

·         8:39am   Shotgun Start for Low Ball/Alternating Shot Matches

·         2:30pm   Tee Times Start for Individual Matches

·         6:00pm   Cookout /Banquet - Lawrence Room

Participants

·         Split into two teams based on handicaps (alternating from top to bottom)

·         The Fort Pros will be captains

·         Teams meet beforehand to determine own pairings/matches

·         Re-paired for Individual matches in afternoon

Prizes

·         $1,000 purse split among winning team members

·         Short Special Recognition Program featuring Yearend Stats

Cost

·         $85 for 27 Holes & Dinner in the Lawrence Room

·         Uniforms/Colors/Names up to team members

·         Dinner - $25 if you’re not golfing but are joining us for dinner

The deadline for entry will be Monday, October 6.  It is going to be important to commit ahead of time so the captains can match you up.  So let your significant other know that October 17 is your last play day for the Men’s Club and that you will be eating dinner “with the guys” that evening.

Special thanks to Rich Elliott and Dave Robinson for all their hard work putting this event together.

Event #10 - Low Gross/Low Net

What a great weekend for golf weather-wise.  With a slightly smaller field, there were ample ways to win a few bucks.  For instance, there were a total of 13 skin winners.  Jeff Bertrand's gross skins contributed to his 75 and medalist honors.  6 other golfers shot in the 70's, most notably Ed Ferguson who shot a 79/66 to easily take net score honors.  Nice job Ed!

This is the first time to take notice of the number of birdies during an event, but I counted 31 among the 28 golfers led by 3 for Gauss and Rollison.  You guys are heating up and the season is almost over.

Please be sure to mark down October 17 for the Ryder Cup event.  Details will be coming in the near future.  You're not going to want to miss this!

2009 Club Championship

WOW - that was an interesting day!  Between the weather, pace fo play, and the 36 holes, a lot was happening or in some of our cases not happening.  I have talked to a few of you and I am curious how the rest of you felt about 36 holes in a day.  Send me an e-mail if you get a chance.  Personally, I wish I had had a little longer to re-group between rounds.

Okay, on to the highlights.  There were so many, but several immediately come to mind.  Nathan Warfel says to me after the second round is over, "Kevin, I switched balls after the first round."  I said (after just having missed a two-footer on 18) something like "so what."  And then I discover seconds later that he had won.  Switching balls - Callaway - $500 - Now I get it!!!  Nate, if you can live with it so can I.  Maybe you ought to write a letter to Titleist and sell your story to them.  Congrats on your victory over some very stiff competition.

Then there is Jeff Bertrand - 89/74!  What else can one say.  Unreal.  Jeff's 74 was the low round of the day.  That leads me to the Championship Flight first round leader - Eric Klein.  No offense to the rest of the Championship Flighters, but I know several of us lesser golfers were pulling for Eric.  Even though he is nowhere near the 9 handicap he posted a month ago, he still stepped up, moved up a flight, and was in the hunt all day until a regrettable score on 17.  Nice job Eric.  Also congrats to Chris Gauss, Kevin Bower and Joseph Fox for posting 2 rounds in the 70's.

I can attest to the fact that the expectations of a First Flighter are high.  Knowing that somewhere in us lies greatness causes undo stress resulting in unimaginable shots.  That's sort of my excuse for why Second Flight winner Rich Elliott would have also won the First Flight.  Good job Rich!  For those of you who didn't stick around, the excitement at the end of the day was an official ruling by Jon Chapple (after consulting several fellow golf professionals) that subsequently led to a playoff between John Maloney and Stan Chapman to decide second place in the Second Flight.  Maloney, unperturbed by the delay, prevailed with a 1st hole par.

After this event, my new hero is Ed Karrmann.  I give him a hard time about playing from the white tees and I had to defend his playing in the White Flight with a 10 handicap, but Ed's like 90 years old!  No seriously, to go 83/80 from any set of tees is quite an accomplishment and my hat is off to Ed for going 36 holes and looking a heck of a lot fresher than many of us did.

I appreciate Bryan Sheedy's leadership in putting this event on and for Jon Chapple's cooperation in making it a success.

Event #9 - Low Gross/Low Net

There were eight rounds under 80 for Event #9 led by Will Haskett's 74.  Joseph Fox followed closely by with a 75, Chris Gauss a 76 and Jeff Bertrand a 76.  However, because Jeff made more cash on the net side, Chris Barnes slid into the 4th spot with a 78.  There were also three members with 3 birdies - Barnes, Haskett & Gauss.  On the net side, six golfers tied with 70's.  The tie breaker put Todd Nierste on top with Shonkwiler, Bertrand & Klein following suit.

I am certain Blake Marti thanks all of you who put in a record $460 into the two skins pots.  He birdied #13 and will be taking home a mere $117.  Nice payday, Blake!!

As you may have noticed, I tried as best I could to put players with similar handicaps together.  Hopefully this gave you a sense of what the Club Championship would be like.  I hope you enjoyed that little preview.

2009 The Fort Club Championship

Gentlemen –

It is time to gear up for The Fort Club Championship.  As you know the new date – August 22 – will replace the regularly scheduled event and will be a 36-hole championship.  The Club Championship which is only open to Men’s Club members will be a 4-flighted event – Championship, 1st, 2nd and White.  This will be a low gross tournament within each flight.  Currently it looks like the flights will be as follows:

  • Championship Flight 0-6
  • 1st Flight 7-10
  • 2nd Flight 11-14
  • White Flight 15+

These breakdowns may change depending on the number of participants in each.

The cost for this event is only $85 for Player’s Pass members ($114 if you are not), but it must be pre-paid.  There will be no other expenses.  So for your entry fee you will get:

  • 36 holes of championship golf
  • Free range balls in the morning
  • Free lunch
  • Plus a few extras

1st and 2nd place in each flight will receive $150 and $75 respectively and plaques commemorating their mastery over the rest of the field.  Double Ryder Cup points will be awarded to all participants.  In addition, those playing in the Championship Flight will have the opportunity to play for a $500 Callaway Golf gift card.  This will require registering with Callaway.  You will receive a link to their website after you have paid your entry fee and indicated an interest in playing in that flight.

There will be absolutely no flex scheduling either in the morning or the afternoon.  Flights will be reset in the afternoon depending on how you played in the morning.  Everyone has the opportunity to move up to a higher flight; however, moving to a lower flight is not permitted with the possible exception being the White Flight if you happen to meet the criteria.

Payment must be received by August 12, 2009.  Please send your entry to:

Event #8 2-Man Best Ball Results

Hey troopers, congrats on getting the round in Saturday!  Since I didn't win any money this event, I don't feel like providing a lengthy and (arguably) witty narrative.  However, I will inform you that the team of Hickey & Maggard won the 2-Man Best Ball on the backup system over Rollison & Lewis.  Peter Dunn led the birdie brigade with 3 including a nice 3 on 18.  This allowed their team to sneak into 4th place.  Guy Rollison is the new points leader with 145.  I was in Michigan at the beach this past weekend.  Seeing all that sand reminded me of Guy.  Get it!!

As you can see below, you are paired with a player who will be your partner for this 2-Man Best Ball event.  4 teams will split the $260 pot.  As for Skins, if you played two weeks ago and put in, that amount will carry over unless you want it back (loser) or want to add more (sucker).  If a player put in last time but is not playing this time, I am putting their money in escrow.  Make sure you put down your gross score on the card.  I will calculate your team net score after.

Good luck.

Event #7 - 2-Man Best Ball Cancelled

After consulting with my illustrious board, I have decided to cancel the rain-soaked 7th Event.  39 golfers were scheduled to tee it up for the weekend and 15 actually finished.  Cheers to those who got it in on Saturday!

If you put a tee in the ground, you will be awarded 5 points.  The prize money will be applied to other events such as the 2-Club Event (I know I previously said 3 clubs, but I was corrected) on Thursday, August 13 and an event we intend to run concurrent with the Ryder Cup (more on that later).

As for Skins, the pot now sits at $150 for Net & $160 for Gross.  I have already made a sheet up that shows what you have already put in.  For the next event you have the option of taking your money out, leaving it as is, or putting in more if you're feeling lucky.  I will instruct The Fort staff on the situation and hope they are in a good mood.

The next event was scheduled to be a Stableford Scoring event.  We are going to replace that with 2-Man Best Ball.  However, I am going to try to pair you with your partner as before.  Many golfers indicated an interest in doing that.

Lastly, thanks for all the positive comments you have shared with me both on and off the course regarding the Men's Club.  It's not perfect, and we all have our own preferences, but the kind things many of you have shared makes this much easier.

Event #6 - Low Gross/Low Net

**  IMPORTANT NOTICE  **

Starting with this round (Event #6), please post your own Men's Club scores on the GHIN website.  That way it will be more timely and you will be assured that it was posted.  Thanks.

Okay, on to Event #6.  Perhaps one of the most noteworthy things to happen was Nate Warfel taking in $104 in skins by getting into both pots.  His birdie on #4 was good for $66 alone because it was good in both.  There is a lesson there, but I'm not sure it's for all of us.  This was despite all the whining he was doing about his thumb!!

The other magic to occur from that same threesome ...  hmm ... was Jeff Bertrand and Eric Klein going 75 and 76, respectively with Bertrand being the low gross medalist.  Is this perhaps a Match Play message from both of these guys?  The other sub-80's were recorded by Chris Gauss 78 (bad day) and Kevin Bower 79.  I'm not going to say anything about Bower or his game because I have him in the first round of match play and I don't want to get him all riled up.  Dennis White also scored some cash - okay it's a certificate - with a fine round of 80.

On the net side, Eric took honors with a 66, Guy "the Rollison/Karrmann Rule kicks into effect next year" Rollison had a 67, Rich "roller coaster" Elliott 70, and Ed Karrmann 71.

Next Event: July 11, 2009

Event #5 - Low Gross/Low Net

I'm glad I got in the news last time about my birdie supremacy because Chris Gauss blew by me like I was standing still on his way to a 70 and low gross honors.  He is now the money leader as well.  Going sub par is awesome!  Rumor has it he has agreed to be on the range next event giving lessons.

Nate Warfel put on a little birdie barrage of his own (4) on the way to 74 and second place.  79's were carded by Brad Daberko and Ed "Aw shucks I'm just an old guy trying to keep up with you kids from these here white tees" Karrmann.

On the net side, Guy "Aw shucks I'm just an old guy trying to keep up with you kids from these here white tees and with one eye!" Rollison came in first with a net 66.  John "13A" Maloney and Rich "13B" Elliott had net 68's.  John Hewett fired a 93 for a net 70.  If he gets a new putter for his birthday, we're all in trouble.

Don't forget the Match Play drawing on Friday, June 26.  More details to come.  Due to injuries, we still have two openings.  If you are interested in potentially making $400 doing something you already love, let me know ASAP.

Event #4 - Modified Stableford Scoring

FIRST, a little housekeeping.  There are only 4 slots left for the MATCH PLAY Tournament.  The deadline is June 19th.  First round matches will be determined by a random drawing in the PRO SHOP on Friday, June 26th.  Brackets will be posted in the Pro Shop for the Men's Club event on the 27th.  First round matches will be played in early July.

SECOND, I realize that the EVENTS information is from last year.  I will get that fixed next week.  If you are looking for this year's schedule, scroll down here under NEWS.

THIRD, I have created a pdf of the Skins and the Stableford scores in case you think I might have made a mistake.  I guess it's possible since Stableford scoring is a tedious manual process.  Just e-mail me if you want a copy.

FOURTH, please do not forget the importance of winning points so that you can become eliglble for the RYDER CUP event at the end of the season.  If you go to STANDINGS, you can see where you stand in the points race.  Tentatively, the top 22 will be invited to participate.

Now, on to Event 4.  On the strength of a net 67, Bill Lewis wins the Stableford with 41 points.  John Maloney, your new money leader, came in second with 38 points and Joseph Fox shot an awesome 75 to come in third.  There was a logjam at 36 points with newcomer Kevin Bower coming out on top of the tie-breaker.

Five golfers fired rounds in the 70's - Fox, Bower, Kearney, Warfel & Gauss.  Nice Job!!  Most importantly, there is a new Birdies leader.  That's right, the author.  I am not above bragging when I get a chance and this may be my last.

We got it in!!  Smooth sailing the rest of the season.

How do you like playing with your teammate?  Let me know.  Okay, on to the results.  A lousy 7 shots separated first from last.  I think we all could find several shots we left out there especially if you found the rough!  Congrats to all the winners.  Chris Welsh won it for his team with a birdie on 18.

On an individual level, Chris Gauss had a 74, Jeff Bertrand fired a 78 and a million people were in the low 80's.  Scores are coming down. (Check RESULTS & STANDINGS.)

Event #2 Low Gross/Low Net

What slow play?  Great job you guys!

This week was sort of the second tune-up before everyone is in with a handicap.  Speaking of handicaps, make sure you take up handicap issues with your golf pro or the person you paid a fee to.  I am happy to listen, but I am not the man to fix things.

If you are new to this website, make sure you go to RESULTS for the previous week, ARCHIVE for prior rounds, and STANDINGS cumulative results.  The later is where you will find your points totals.  Remember, these will be very important at years end when they will determine who gets into the RYDER CUP EVENT.

I purposefully put Gauss and Haskett together because I was curious to see what would happen.  No disappointment there - Chris fires a 72 and Will a 77.  Nice job for this early in the season!  Also, you will see the name John Maloney listed four times below.  His total haul of cash and merchadise (you guys have been pretty gentle so far on the gift certificate thing - bless you) was $136!!  This lefty could be trouble this year despite an 80 yard drive on #1.

NEXT EVENT - MAY 16

The correct results for Skins aren't that far off from where they were before with the awful exception of unfairly getting Dennis White's hopes up.  I am very sorry Dennis.  It was human error that put the handicaps in wrong for Dennis and Brian Huffine who brought this whole thing to my attention.  As you can see below, Brian was right to do so!

First, thanks for indulging me with my desire to change things up a bit.  I hope this is something we all can look forward to in coming years.

Whew!  Kind of a brutal start golf-wise.  We've all got lots of excuses - new season, high winds, fast greens, slow play - but it was still painful.  Especially the slow play - but I won't get into that because Dave Shonkwiler did a masterful job in his e-mail today.

Without further delay, here are the important results from last weekend.  If you think I've made a mistake, it must be the software, not me.

Final 2008 Update

Results - Well, that's it.  A very good year, especially if your name is Greg.  I would like to thank Chris Barnes for keeping this thing afloat for two years.  In what I hope is a seamless transition, I, Kevin "no threat to win any money" Billingsley, will be taking the reins.

Now onto the last Saturday.  Did I get incorrect data or did I see two EAGLES on scorecards?  Ed "are you kiddin' me" Karrmann had one on #16 on his way to an amazing 77.  As I always say, I don't care what tees you're playing from, you still gotta make the shots.  The other eagle belonged to Peter Dunn on #7 (I want to hear that story).  He also got into the money column coming in 5th.  Congrats also go to Mark Studley (3rd), Nathan Warfel (4th) and Brad Harris (6th).

But the big news is Greg Klug and his definitive claim to the crown.  He shut the door on all challengers with a 77 and won both the last event and the overall championship.  His yearend take was a staggering $670!!  I envision the "powers that be" coming up with assorted Klug/Karrmann Rules for 2009.

In the next week I will be sending out the vision for next year that was discussed at the meeting several weeks ago.  It is both aggressive and exciting.  Now if we could just get this frickin economy back in line, we might be able to afford to play.

Have a safe and healthy off-season!

10/2 Update

Looking forward to seeing you guys at Taylor's Pub on Monday at 5:30.  Thanks in advance for taking the time out.

Results - There is a slight shakeup at the top.  Greg is perhaps not as comfortable as he once was with his points leadership.  Ed and Guy are within striking distance if Greg doesn't take care of business.  On the other hand, like Vijay and the Fed Ex Cup, the money leadership is out of reach.  Nice goin' Greg!

Nathan went nuts last Saturday and passed Chris for the birdie leadership with four more.  He also recorded the first eagle of the year.

Next Event - Final event of the year - October 11, Stableford Scroing.  Good luck.

9/17 Update

Results - The bad news is that I got rained out on Sunday (okay there were a few others playing), but the good news is that over half of those who played on Saturday won some cash.  And only under those circumstances does a 79 from Ed "White Tees" Karrmann and a cool 100 from Rob Town equal 2nd place.  The big winners, however, were Guy and Blake with a 63.  Nice job!

Greg and One Eye Guy are now atop the Fed Up Cup leaderboard with 158 and 133 points respectively.  If you check out the standings, you'll see that they are the only two to have played all 11 events.  Perhaps there is something to that!

Event - September 27 - Low Gross/Low Net

Only two more to go.  I will be sending out invites to an end of the year wrap-up get-together to discuss next year.  Hope you can make it.  KB

9/8 Update

Well, we are winding down, but the witty banter continues.  Sorry for the lateness of this post but I actually do work - unlike some of you banterites!  Just kidding, it shows how much you love one another.  Halleluiah - can I get an Amen!!

How's recruiting for next year coming along?  I think I have two new bloods and I know Rich Elliott has one.  Start working on guys you think will enjoy quality competition and all that banter.

Results - Congrats to Greg (we will figure out this handicap thing for next year), One eye, Nate and Ed on raking in the big bucks on Event 10.  Perhaps overlooked was Joe Turner's net 69.  Nice job!  Not sure how I caught this, but Nate had 14 4's on his way to a 75.  I would call that boring except for the fact that he made it so doggone easy to add.

After 10 events, Greg has lapped most of the field with 157 points.  Ed "White Tee" Karrmann and Guy "One Eye" Rollison are climbing through the ranks with 98 and 113, respectively.  3 Players now have gross averages under 80 - Chris, Nate and Bryan in that order.  Chris is still the birdie leader with 17.

Next Event - Saturday, September 13 - 2-Man Best Ball

8/19 Update

Results - I admit to not noticing the Blue Tee mandate for this event.  But could you not help but shed a tear for "One Eye Guy"?  That is, of course, until you see that he bagged $40.  The parade of e-mails that followed Guy's outcry were excellent, although I am not sure how we got to a one club from the gold tees event.

There has been a change at the top - Greg Klug has reclaimed his rightful place as points leader.  Bryan Sheedy goes low again with a 76 and dropped his gross average down to 79.0.  Chris Barnes is not far behind at 79.25.

Just for kicks, I went back and looked at who has improved the most over the 9 events (and yes I do have a real job).  Sorry, it wasn't that interesting.  We're all over the board - some have improved significantly like Dave Robinson dropping almost 6 strokes from Event 3 to Event 9, while others have managed to get worse (not naming names).

Looking to the Future - Start giving some thought to next year.  As Bryan Sheedy, in his infinite wisdom, recently said, "If we would all recruit one golfer we would be set."  Or something like that.  But the point is well taken.  Plant the seed now for next year by talking up the Men's Club.

I'm already planning on a survey to see what you like or don't like, i.e., formats, rules, course.  My photos suck, so for next year I am going to redo them with a digital camera with player info attached.  I also want create an opportunity for more interaction using this website.  Plan on attending a meeting immediately following the end of the season so we catch ideas while they are still warm.

Next Event - August 30, Three-Man Best Ball Stableford Scoring

8/5 Update

Results - Congratulations to the money winners of Event #8 - Messieurs Rollison, Barnes, Davis and Klug.  Just an observation - more of us should either play on Friday or opt to play from the white tees.  Hey, a rules a rule, right?  Am I bitter because i can't seem to get more than the one point 'kiss on the cheek" every round - perhaps.

Now, as for playing on Friday.  Guy and Chris apparently found the course to their liking (undoubtedly very accessible pin placements - Did you know Guy works there?) as they amassed 44 points each.  Guy shoots a very impressive 82 to win the big money, but Chris totally lights it up with 3 more birdies on way to a 71.  That now makes 17 on the season.  Very impressive!!

Chris has overtaken Greg Klug as the points leader by a slim margin of 2.3 points.  But Greg still managed to win a few more bucks and leads that category with $290.  He's half way to a new set of irons.  Greg must have heard me comment to someone that he was still "birdieless" after 7 events.  He stepped up and had two on the front.  I'm not talking about him ever again.

Next Event - We will be teeing it up again on August 16.  The format is a three-man best ball.  Hit'em straight!

7/21 Update

2-Club Thursday - This special event will start at 6pm.  Remember, you are allowed only two clubs.  And yes, Dave, we will be playing the front nine, but great question.

Leaders - After 7 events, the low gross average leader is Bryan Sheedy at 79.5.  Greg Klug is still the money leader at $270 (WOW!!) and Chris Barnes has a comfortable birdie lead with 12.  Check STANDINGS for the rest of the stats.

Next Event - We will tee it up again August 2 for a Stableford Scoring event. See you then!

7/15 Update

Well, I have learned my lesson on what I can and cannot say on this website.  Greg Klug took exception with my chiding last week, so I take full responsibility for his tacking on another 15 points.  (Check out the STANDINGS section on where you stand.)

Congrats to the team of Rollison & Town for their Event 6 Vegas Scoring victory.  Guy and Rob fired net scores of 63 and 64 respectively and beat the nearest competitors - the team of Klug and Daberko - by 54 points.  That is terrific shooting!

Congrats as well to Event 6 skins winners - Victor Bond, John Hickey, Blake Marti and two for Chuck Sukurs.

Speaking of Chuck Sukurs, he was a participant this past weekend in The Fort Club Championship.  Due to the threat of bad weather on Saturday (that never materialized), it became a one day event.  The low gross winner was Greg McCall with a 76.  Our own Nate Warfel was second with with a 78.  Bryan Sheedy ended up in the money with an 82.  Low net was won by Rich (the last 6 feet are the toughest) Elliott with a 73/81.  Chuck Sukers was second with a 73 and Chris (whatever happened to you) Shinkle came in third.

There were only 10 participants, so I'm sure Jon Chapple will be willing to listen to ideas you have for making the event more attractive to you.

Event 7 is a LOW GROSS/LOW NET day. Let Chris or me know ASAP if you are planning to play.  Good luck!

7/9 Update

We are still waiting on a few scores from Event 6.  It seems the Friday guys ate their card.  Thanks Brad for responding so quickly.  Guy - if you're out there, e-mail me your scores by hole.

Don't forget to sign up for the Club Championship if you haven't already.  As of Monday, there were only a dozen or so.

Here's a question for you.  Can you win a skin with a par?  Rich Elliott weighed in and said no.  What do you think?  E-mail your answer to kevin@perstrat.com.

Next Event - July 19 Low Gross/Low Net

6/26 Update

2-Club Challenge Date Set -- Mark your calendar for Thursday, July 24 at 6pm and start thinking about your two clubs.  I tried to convince Nate on Saturday that two wedges might do the trick, but I don't think he was listening.  We'll get back to you in the next couple weeks with more details.

Standings -- Greg Klug is currently tearing up the Men's Club!  He is the points and money leader.  Don't worry though, his handicap will soon gravitate to where it belongs ... we hope.

Brad Daberko is currently your low gross leader at 79.6.  Chris Barnes and Rich Elliott are high with 7 birdies each.  Check out the STANDINGS section to see how the rest of the field is doing.

Next Event -- Event #6 is scheduled for Saturday, July 5.  The format will be 2-Man Vegas Scoring.   Because of the holiday, it may be necessary to invoke the "flex" schedule like never before.  Please let us know ASAP what your intentions are.

Eventually, everything you are going to need will be found here, so make sure you stop at this site on a regular basis.  Thanks and Hit'em Straight!

Also, remember to go to EVENTS to let us know when you think you will be playing in the future.  This helps tremendously in the planning process.

Welcome golfers to the inaugural launch of The Fort Men's Club Website

Our goal with this site is to enhance your league experience by providing current information regarding events, tracking your accomplishments, and giving you a central location to share your thought s with other members – outrageous smack is welcomed (minus profanity, of course). Hopefully the more you use the site, the more you will appreciate its value. Please take the time to get acquainted with the site. For instance, one nice feature of the site is the gallery of photos that allows you to see who you are playing with or against. And then for the stats geeks among you, the site allows you to see how you stack up against the competition.

We will be making changes to better the site as time goes on. If you have additional ideas, please feel free to share them with either one of us.

A special thanks goes to Ryan Billingsley for designing, programming and hosting the website. (His old man could never have pulled this off by himself!)

Enjoy the rest of the year. We’re glad you’re aboard.
